Illustration for Oranga Tamariki Act 1989

When you are involved in a court case about a child or young person under the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989, you need to tell the child's parents or guardians about it. You must give them a copy of the court papers and explain what is happening. You have to tell them what the court case is about and what might happen. You also have to tell them they can go to the court hearing or have a lawyer go for them.

If the court makes a decision, the court staff will tell the child's parents or guardians about it. They will give them a copy of the decision and explain what it means. They will also tell them if they can appeal the decision.
