If you are looking at an election advertisement that has information about two or more candidates, this law applies to you. The costs of making the advertisement must be divided among the candidates based on how much of the advertisement is about each candidate. You calculate the costs by adding up what it cost to make each part of the advertisement about a candidate, and this total is called the election expenses of the election advertisement.

You work out how much of the advertisement is about each candidate in a way that makes sense for the type of advertisement it is. Only the costs that are assigned to a candidate are considered their election expenses.

You can find more information about changes to this law in section 8 of the Electoral (Finance Reform and Advance Voting) Amendment Act 2010.
