When a general election is happening, you need to know what a regulated period is. The regulated period is a time frame that is defined in the Electoral Act 1993. It is the time when some rules apply to elections.

If the Prime Minister says when the election day will be and does not change it, the regulated period starts on the later of two days. It starts on the day after the Prime Minister makes the announcement or three months before the election day. The regulated period ends on the day before the election.

If the Prime Minister does not say when the election day will be by a certain time, the regulated period starts on that day. It still ends on the day before the election.

If the Prime Minister changes the election day, the regulated period is the shorter of two time frames. One time frame starts on the day after the change is announced and ends on the day before the new election day. The other time frame starts three months before the new election day and ends on the day before the new election day.

You should understand that the default day is two years and nine months after the last general election. The Prime Minister gives public notice by making a media statement, which is like a public announcement.
