Illustration for Electoral Act 1993

To work out the Māori electoral population, the Electoral Commission must give the Government Statistician some information after counting day. You need to know what counting day means - it is usually the day of the census, but if there is a census and an election in the same year, it means 1 April the following year. The information the Electoral Commission must give includes the number of people registered to vote in Māori electoral districts, the number of Māori people registered to vote in General electoral districts, and the number of people on the dormant rolls for both Māori and General electoral districts, which are maintained under section 109. The Government Statistician uses this information to calculate the Māori electoral population. When the information is given, it must be what was true on census day, which is the day the last periodic census was done.
