76: Māori option

You could also call this:

"Māori people can choose which type of electoral district they want to be part of."

Illustration for Electoral Act 1993

If you are Māori and can be registered as an elector, you can choose to be registered in a Māori electoral district or a General electoral district. You have this choice because of what is called the Māori option. The Māori option lets you decide which type of electoral district you want to be part of.

You can exercise the Māori option by following the rules set out in section 77. This means you need to follow the steps outlined in that section to make your choice. You get to decide whether you want to be registered in a Māori or General electoral district.
