Illustration for Electoral Act 1993

If you are in a political party registered under the Electoral Act 1993 and the party secretary leaves, the other office holders must fill the gap. They have 5 working days to appoint a new secretary or someone to act as secretary until a new one is chosen. You can find more information about the Electoral Act 1993 and the Electoral Amendment Act 2017 on the legislation website.

When a new secretary is appointed, or someone is chosen to act as secretary, they must tell the Electoral Commission right away. This is an important step to keep the Electoral Commission informed about changes in the party's leadership.

The Electoral Commission needs to know who is in charge of the party, so they can stay in touch and make sure everything runs smoothly.
