Electoral Act 1993

The House of Representatives - Vacancies

59: No person to be candidate for more than 1 district or on more than 1 list

You could also call this:

"You can only be a candidate in one area or on one party list in an election."

Illustration for Electoral Act 1993

You can't be a candidate in more than one electoral district at a general election. You also can't have your name on more than one party list that is submitted under section 127. If you try to do either of these things, your nominations will be void.

If there are two or more by-elections on the same day, you can't be a candidate in more than one of them. You can be a candidate in one electoral district and have your name on one party list at a general election. This party list must be submitted under section 127.

If you break these rules, you will lose any money you paid to be a candidate, and it will go into a Crown Bank Account. This happens if you try to be a candidate in more than one district, on more than one party list, or in more than one by-election.
