Illustration for Electoral Act 1993

The Electoral Commission has several jobs to do. You can think of these jobs as their main tasks. They have to make sure the rules in the Electoral Act are followed. They also have to do things related to electoral broadcasting, which is explained in Part 6 of the Broadcasting Act 1989.

The Electoral Commission has to teach people about electoral matters. They do this by running education and information programmes. They are also in charge of a fund created by section 6 of the Election Access Fund Act 2020.

The Electoral Commission has to think about and report on electoral matters when the Minister or the House of Representatives asks them to. They have to help parties, candidates, and others understand what they need to do to follow the rules. They also have to do any other jobs given to them by other laws.
