Illustration for Electoral Act 1993

The Electoral Commission can make a list of people who live in a certain area, called a habitation index. You will be on this list if you live in that area and are on the electoral roll. The list will show your name and the number that is given to you on the electoral roll.

The Electoral Commission must make a new habitation index for an area as soon as they can after they print the main electoral roll for that area. This means you will be able to find your name on the list with your electoral roll number.

The Electoral Commission is in charge of making these lists, which are used to keep track of who lives where and who is on the electoral roll, you can find more information about the laws that govern this on the Electoral (Administration) Amendment Act 2011 website.
