Illustration for Electoral Act 1993

The Electoral Commission has to give the Returning Officer the information they need. You can think of the Returning Officer as the person in charge of elections in a certain area. The Electoral Commission must give them as many copies as they need of the main roll and supplementary rolls for their area and any other area.

The Electoral Commission also has to give the Returning Officer a copy of the list of people who were removed from the electoral roll after the election was announced, which is referred to in section 98(5). The Electoral Commission can give the Returning Officer any other information that might help identify voters. This can include things like addresses or dates of birth.

Sometimes the Electoral Commission can change the way they give the Returning Officer this information, like using a computer to make it easier to find someone on the electoral roll, even if other parts of the law say they should do it a certain way, like in sections 105 to 107 and 110.
