When you read about vacancies in the Electoral Act 1993, you need to know what some words mean. A parliamentary leader is a member of Parliament who is in charge of a political party. This person is either chosen by most of the party's members in Parliament or is acting as the leader for the time being.

You also need to know what a political party for which the member of Parliament was elected means. If a member of Parliament was elected to represent an area, it is the party that chose them as a candidate. If a member was elected from a party list under section 127, or section 137(4), it is the party whose list they were on.
