Illustration for Electoral Act 1993

You must pay $300 to the Electoral Commission if you want to be a constituency candidate. You can pay this deposit in cash or by direct credit to a bank account chosen by the Electoral Commission. The deposit is due by noon on nomination day. If you do not get at least 5% of the total votes, you will lose your deposit and it will go into a Crown Bank Account. In other cases, the Electoral Commission will return your deposit after they get completed returns from you under sections 205K and 209. You will get your deposit back if you are successful or get more than 5% of the votes, but only after you give the Electoral Commission the required returns. The Electoral Commission must get these returns before they can return your deposit.
