174: MSD may give notice requiring person to take reasonable steps to obtain overseas pension

You could also call this:

“MSD can tell you to try to get a pension from another country”

The government agency MSD can send you a written notice if you, your partner, or someone applying for or receiving a benefit in New Zealand might be able to get a pension from another country. This notice tells you that you need to do everything you reasonably can to get that overseas pension.

The notice will explain that you have to take all reasonable steps to get the overseas pension for yourself. It will also tell you how long you have to do this.

MSD can send this notice to you if you’re asking for a benefit, if you’re already getting a benefit, or if you’re the partner of someone who is applying for or receiving a benefit in New Zealand.
