Social Security Act 2018

Assistance - Funeral grants

92: Funeral grant: eligibility if deceased person has no dependants

You could also call this:

“You might get help paying for someone's funeral if they had no family to support”

If a person who has died does not have any dependants, you might be able to get help to pay for their funeral. This help is called a funeral grant. To be eligible, two things need to be true:

First, the person who died must be an adult, not a child. Second, there must not be enough money in the person’s estate to pay for the funeral before paying off any other debts they might have had.

This rule is part of the Social Security Act 2018, which is a law in New Zealand that helps people who need financial support.
