Social Security Act 2018

Administration - Commencement, stand downs, ending, and expiry and regrant - Expiry and regrant of specified benefits

332: General rule

You could also call this:

"What happens to your benefit when it reaches its expiry date"

When you get a specified benefit, it stops on the expiry date. You are no longer entitled to the benefit after this date. This rule has some exceptions, which are explained in sections 334 and 336.

If you are getting a specified benefit, it may stop on the expiry date, but you might still get some payments. These payments can include the specified benefit and other assistance you were getting before the expiry date. You might also get payments for assistance that would have kept being paid if your specified benefit had not stopped, according to regulations made under section 441(1), (2)(d), and (4A).

You can find more information about how this rule has changed over time by looking at the Social Security Amendment Act 2025.
