5: Guide to this Act

“This Act explains how to get help from the government and what you need to do”

This Act is divided into eight parts, and here’s what each part covers:

Part 1 explains important words and ideas used in the Act.

Part 2 talks about the different types of help you can get. This includes main assistance like jobseeker support and sole parent support, as well as extra help like accommodation supplement and childcare assistance.

Part 3 explains what you need to do to get help, and what the government needs to do for you.

Part 4 talks about things that can change how much help you get, like if you’re in hospital or overseas.

Part 5 explains what happens if you don’t follow the rules, and what the punishments are.

Part 6 is about how the government runs the system, like how to apply for help and how you get paid.

Part 7 tells you what to do if you disagree with a decision about your help.

Part 8 has other important information about the Act.

There’s also a list at the end that explains all the special words used in the Act.

This Act is mostly a new version of older laws. It’s meant to do the same things as those old laws, but it’s written in a clearer way. However, there are some small changes, which you can find in a special list called Schedule 11.
