Social Security Act 2018

Obligations - MSD’s obligations - Steps to make people affected aware of their obligations, etc

106: MSD must make people affected aware of their obligations, consequences of non-compliance, and their review and appeal rights

You could also call this:

“MSD must clearly explain your responsibilities and rights when you get social support”

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) has to make sure you know about your responsibilities if you receive social support. They need to tell you what you must do and what might happen if you don’t do these things.

MSD has to explain to you what your obligations are in a way that’s easy to understand. They should also tell you what could happen if you don’t meet these obligations. This includes letting you know about any penalties you might face.

It’s also MSD’s job to tell you about your rights. They need to explain that you can ask for a review or make an appeal if you don’t agree with a decision about your obligations. MSD should tell you how to do this using sections 391 and 397 of the law.

MSD must take steps to make sure you understand all of this information clearly. They need to do this in a reasonable and appropriate way for everyone who has obligations under this part of the law.
