Social Security Act 2018

Other provisions - Repeals and revocations

457: Department of Social Welfare Act 1971 repealed

You could also call this:

“Old law about Social Welfare Department is cancelled, but some job titles still work”

The Department of Social Welfare Act 1971 is no longer in effect. This means that the law that set up the Department of Social Welfare has been cancelled.

Even though this law is cancelled, it doesn’t change two important things:

  1. In the Adoption Act 1955, when you see ‘Child Welfare Officer’, it now means ‘social worker’.

  2. In Schedule 1 of the Social Security Act 2018, when you see ‘Child Welfare Officer’, it also means ‘social worker’.

These changes help make sure that the roles mentioned in older laws still make sense with the current system.
