General provisions

7: Minister may give MSD binding directions

You could also call this:

“The Minister can tell MSD how to do its job”

The Minister can give written instructions to MSD about how to do its job under this Act and the New Zealand Superannuation and Retirement Income Act 2001. These instructions can be general or specific.

There are some things these instructions can’t do. They can’t give directions about preferred suppliers or debt recovery. There are other rules for those topics.

MSD must follow all the instructions the Minister gives them when doing their job.

When the Minister gives these instructions, they become a type of law called secondary legislation. This means they have to be published in a certain way.
