Telecommunications Act 2001

Telecommunications service obligations - Amounts payable by liable persons to the Crown - General matters

90: Crown use of telecommunications development levy

You could also call this:

"The government can use the telecommunications development levy money to improve phone and internet services in New Zealand."

Illustration for Telecommunications Act 2001

The government can use the money collected from the telecommunications development levy for certain things. You might wonder what these things are. The money can be used to pay for things like non-urban telecommunications infrastructure development, upgrades to the emergency service calling system, and other purposes that will help people in New Zealand get access to telecommunications services.

The Minister gets to decide what other purposes the money can be used for, but they have to talk to the people who paid the levy and other important groups first. This is so they can make sure the money is being used in a way that will really help people.

The government does not have to use the money within a certain time frame, except in some special cases mentioned in section 94L.
