Telecommunications Act 2001

Networks - Network operators and networks generally - Information requirement

111A: Information about interconnection arrangements

You could also call this:

"Big telecom companies must share how others can connect to their networks"

Illustration for Telecommunications Act 2001

If you are a major supplier of telecommunications, you must make some information available to the public. You have to share the procedures for connecting to your Public Telecommunications Network, or PTN. You also have to share the terms and conditions for supplying interconnection with your PTN.

A major supplier is a company like Spark, or someone the Governor-General declares to be a major supplier. The Minister can only recommend this if it helps New Zealand follow international rules. An order to declare someone a major supplier is secondary legislation, which has its own publication requirements, as explained in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.

You can think of a PTN like a big network that lets people communicate with each other. The Minister and the Governor-General are important people who help make decisions about laws and rules in New Zealand. They have to follow certain processes to make sure everything is fair and legal.
