Maritime Transport Act 1994

Protection of marine environment from harmful substances - Obligations to protect marine environment from harmful substances

231: Obligations of Director, Environmental Protection Authority, and regional councils to share information concerning notices

You could also call this:

"Government agencies must share information about important notices to protect the marine environment."

When a notice is given to a regional council, the Environmental Protection Authority, or the Director under sections like 227, 228, 229, 230, or 299, you need to know what happens next. The regional council and the Environmental Protection Authority must tell the Director about the notice without delay. The Director must then tell the regional council or the Environmental Protection Authority about the notice, depending on where the issue is happening.

If the issue is in a regional council's area, the Director tells the regional council. If the issue is in New Zealand continental waters, the Director tells the Environmental Protection Authority. This way, everyone knows what is going on and can work together to protect the marine environment.
