Maritime Transport Act 1994

General provisions relating to shipping - Safety services

199A: Minister may direct agencies with respect to search and rescue operations

You could also call this:

"The Minister can instruct agencies on how to handle search and rescue operations."

The Minister can tell certain agencies what to do when it comes to search and rescue operations. You might be wondering which agencies - it's the Civil Aviation Authority, Maritime New Zealand, or other government agencies that the Minister is in charge of. The Minister can direct these agencies to operate the search and rescue centre, co-ordinate search and rescue operations, or perform these operations, as outlined in section 199(1)(a).

The Minister can also tell these agencies to use the powers given to the Minister in section 199(1)(b) and (c) and (2). This means the agencies can do things like make decisions about search and rescue operations on behalf of the Minister. The Minister has the authority to give these directions to make sure search and rescue operations are carried out effectively.

You can find more information about the laws related to search and rescue operations by looking at the Maritime Transport Act 1994 and other relevant laws, such as the Civil Aviation Act 2023.
