Illustration for Maritime Transport Act 1994

You must tell the Authority if you are the master of a New Zealand ship or a foreign ship in New Zealand waters and something goes wrong. This includes if someone gets seriously hurt, there is an accident, or an incident happens. You need to tell the Authority as soon as you can. If the master of the ship cannot tell the Authority, the operator of the ship must do it. The operator must give the Authority the necessary information. This is because the master might be hurt or unable to tell the Authority. You also need to tell the Authority if you are involved in an accident or incident with a New Zealand ship or a foreign ship in New Zealand waters. This includes if you operate, maintain, or service the ship, or do anything else to it. You must tell the Authority as soon as you can if the maritime rules say you have to. If someone is co-ordinating a search and rescue operation for a ship or person missing at sea, they must tell the Authority about it as soon as they can. The Authority might ask for more information after you tell them something. You must give them the extra information right away if they ask for it.
