Maritime Transport Act 1994

Preliminary provisions

5A: Functions of Minister

You could also call this:

"The Minister's jobs are to keep people and the sea safe, and follow international rules."

The Minister has some important jobs under this Act. You need to know what the Minister is responsible for, which includes promoting safety in maritime transport and protecting the marine environment. The Minister also has to make sure New Zealand follows international rules and agreements about maritime and marine protection.

The Minister's jobs also include getting New Zealand ready for and responding to marine oil pollution spills. You should be aware that the Minister can make rules about maritime and marine protection under this Act.

The Minister's role is to carry out these tasks as part of the Maritime Transport Act, which is a law in New Zealand, and you can find more information about the changes to this law on the Maritime Transport Amendment Act 2004 webpage.
