Local regulation of maritime activity

33B: Interpretation

You could also call this:

"What special words mean in the Maritime Transport Act"

When you read this part of the law, you need to know what some words mean. A commercial port is a place where ships come and go, and it can be run by a company or another group. It includes the buildings and equipment used to run the port.

You also need to know what maritime-related activities are - these are things that people do that can affect the safety of ships and boats. Oil has the same meaning as it does in section 222(1) of another law. The owner of a wreck can be the person who bought it, or the materials it was made of, if the wreck is abandoned or sunk.

A personal water craft is a special kind of boat that you ride on, like a jet ski. It has a closed hull and does not take on water if it tips over. You operate it by standing, sitting, or kneeling on it.

A port company is a company that runs a port, and a port operator is the person or group in charge of a commercial port. A public authority is a group like a government department or a local council. A region is an area of land, and it has the same meaning as in section 5(1) of the Local Government Act 2002.

A regional council is a group that helps run a region, and it can be a special kind of council or a unitary authority. A territorial authority is a group that runs a local area, and it has the same meaning as in section 5(1) of the Local Government Act 2002.

A wreck can be a ship or plane that is abandoned or sunk, or equipment that has fallen off a ship. It can also be a derelict ship, which is a ship that is no longer being used.
