"What special words mean in this law"

When you read this part of the law, some words have special meanings. The LLMC Convention refers to the Convention on the Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims done at London on 19 November 1976, and you can find a copy of it in Schedule 8. The LLMC Protocol refers to the Protocol of 1996 to amend the LLMC Convention done at London on 2 May 1996, and you can find a copy of it in Schedule 9.

When you see the words "ship" or "seagoing ship" in the LLMC Convention and LLMC Protocol, they mean any kind of vessel used or intended to be used in navigation. This includes barges, lighters, and other similar vessels, however they are propelled. It also includes any structure that has been launched and is intended to be used as a ship, and any ship used by the New Zealand Defence Force.
