Maritime Transport Act 1994

Plans and responses to protect marine environment from marine oil spills - Oil Pollution Advisory Committee

282: Oil Pollution Advisory Committee

You could also call this:

"A group that helps make decisions about oil spills in New Zealand's oceans."

The Oil Pollution Advisory Committee gives advice to the Authority on certain matters. You will see the Committee advise on the New Zealand Marine Oil Spill Response Strategy, oil pollution levies imposed under Part 24, and the use of the New Zealand Oil Pollution Fund. The Committee also advises on other matters related to marine oil spills that the Minister or Director specifies.

The Minister appoints people to the Committee, including the Director, other persons the Minister determines, and a chairperson. When appointing members, the Minister considers whether the Committee should have members who represent or have experience relating to industries such as shipping, oil and gas exploration, and production and distribution.

The Minister also considers members from regional councils, Maritime New Zealand, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry for the Environment, the Department of Conservation, and Te Puni Kokiri. The Committee can regulate its own procedure, and members are appointed on terms and conditions determined by the Minister, including travelling allowances and expenses paid out of the New Zealand Oil Pollution Fund.
