Maritime Transport Act 1994

General provisions relating to shipping - Safety services

199: Search and rescue operations

You could also call this:

"Helping People in Trouble at Sea or in the Air"

The Minister has to set up a centre to co-ordinate search and rescue operations. You can think of search and rescue operations as efforts to find and help people who are lost or in trouble. The Minister's centre will handle aviation, maritime, and other types of search and rescue operations. The Minister can do what is necessary to make sure these operations are done well. This includes following international agreements that New Zealand is part of. The Minister can also appoint people to help with search and rescue operations.

The Minister can pay people who help with search and rescue operations, using money given by Parliament for this purpose. This can include paying people who own vehicles, ships, or aircraft used in these operations. You can find more information about this by looking at the Maritime Transport Act 1994 and the Civil Aviation Act 2023.
