The Director has to prepare the New Zealand marine oil spill response strategy by a certain date. The Minister sets this date and tells everyone about it in the Gazette. The Director must review this strategy at least every 5 years.

You can find more information about changes to this rule in section 11 of the Maritime Transport Amendment Act (No 2) 2005. The Director's job is to make sure the strategy is up to date. This helps keep New Zealand's marine environment safe from oil spills.
