Maritime Transport Act 1994

General provisions relating to shipping - Maritime levies

192: Exemptions from maritime levies

You could also call this:

"Some ships don't have to pay maritime levies, depending on the type of ship or what it's used for."

The law says regulations can exempt some ships from paying maritime levies. You might not have to pay if you have a certain type of ship or use it for a specific purpose. Regulations can also say when a ship is exempt from paying maritime levies.

Regulations made under the Maritime Transport Act can decide which ships do not have to pay maritime levies. You can be totally or partially exempt, depending on what the regulations say. The regulations can also impose conditions on exemptions.

The Maritime Transport Amendment Act 2013 changed some of the rules about exemptions from maritime levies, you can read more about it on the New Zealand legislation website. This means the rules about which ships have to pay maritime levies might be different now. You should look at the regulations to see if your ship is exempt from paying maritime levies.
