A harbourmaster is a person who helps keep you safe on the water. They have powers and duties given to them by laws like the Maritime Transport Act 1994. They use these powers to ensure maritime safety in ports, harbours, or waters where they have been appointed by the regional council.

You can find more information about the laws that give harbourmasters their powers on the New Zealand legislation website.

A harbourmaster's job is to make sure everyone follows the rules to stay safe on the water.
