You need to tell the Transport Accident Investigation Commission about accidents or incidents. The Director must do this as soon as possible after being notified under section 31. This includes accidents with New Zealand or foreign commercial ships in New Zealand waters. You must also tell them about accidents where someone is seriously harmed on a New Zealand ship. The Director must notify them about incidents with more than one ship, where at least one is a commercial ship. This is if the Authority thinks it could become an accident. If there is a search and rescue operation under section 31(4), the Director must tell the Commission. This is if they think the ship involved is one that needs to be reported.
