When you think about keeping our oceans clean, you need to know about the rules that help protect them. The Maritime Transport Act 1994 and the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012 have rules about stopping harmful substances from getting into the sea. These rules apply to ships and other things that might release harmful substances into the ocean.

You should be aware that these rules cover different areas of the ocean, including the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf. The Maritime Transport Act 1994 regulates the discharge of harmful substances from ships in these areas. It applies to New Zealand ships and foreign ships that are involved in mining activities.

The Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012 also has rules about stopping harmful substances from getting into the sea. It regulates discharges from structures, submarine pipelines, and ships that are involved in mining activities. These rules help keep our oceans clean and protect the environment.
