Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012

Sale and supply of alcohol generally - Licensing generally, requirements on licensees, and conditions - Permitted trading hours

43: Default national maximum trading hours

You could also call this:

“Maximum hours to sell or serve alcohol in New Zealand”

If you want to sell alcohol, you need to know the default national maximum trading hours. The default hours are between 8 am and 4 am the next day for places where people drink alcohol on the premises, like restaurants or bars. You can sell alcohol at these places during these hours if you have an on-licence or a club licence.

If you have an off-licence, which means people buy alcohol to drink somewhere else, you can sell it between 7 am and 11 pm. These hours apply to you unless there are special rules on certain days. You should check sections 47 and 48 to see if there are any restrictions on days like Anzac Day morning, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, or Christmas Day.
