Sale and supply of alcohol generally - Licensing process: special licences - Applications for special licences

149: Duration of special licences

You could also call this:

"How long a special alcohol licence lasts"

A special licence is in force for a certain amount of time. If it is issued for a single event, it is in force on the day or days of the event. If it is issued for a series of events, it is in force for the shorter of the time the events occur or 12 months after it is issued.

If a special licence is issued to someone who already has an on-licence or club licence, it is in force for the premises. It can be in force for up to 12 months after it is issued, or for a shorter time stated by the licensing committee. If no time is stated, it is in force for 12 months after it is issued.

If an event is postponed, the special licence is still in force on the new day of the event. You can compare this to s 82 to see how it relates to other laws. This helps you understand how special licences work in New Zealand.
