Resource Management Act 1991

Standards, policy statements, and plans - National direction - New Zealand coastal policy statements

58: Contents of New Zealand coastal policy statements

You could also call this:

“A list of things that can be included in rules about New Zealand's coast”

A New Zealand coastal policy statement can include objectives and policies about many things. You can find information about protecting special coastal areas, including those important to Māori people. It can talk about how to use coastal areas, what the government wants to do with coastal marine areas, and how to keep the natural character of the coast. The statement can also cover New Zealand’s promises to other countries about coastal areas, how to check if the policies are working, and how to make sure people can get to the coast. It can include ways to protect special rights of Māori people and anything else that fits with what the coastal policy statement is for.

The statement can also include other things that are usually in national policy statements. These are explained in another part of the law called section 45A(2) and (4).

The coastal policy statement, or parts of it, can apply to all coastal areas or just some specific coastal areas. This means the rules in the statement can be for the whole coast or just certain parts of it.
