59: Purpose of regional policy statements
or “Regional policy statements explain how to manage natural resources in a whole region”

You could also call this:

“How regional councils make and update plans for their area's development”

Every region in New Zealand must always have a regional policy statement. The regional council is responsible for creating this statement. They must follow the steps outlined in Schedule 1 when making the statement.

You can change a regional policy statement. To do this, you need to follow the process described in Schedule 1. A Minister of the Crown, the regional council, or any territorial authority that is fully or partly within the region can start the process to change the statement.
