Resource Management Act 1991

Standards, policy statements, and plans - National direction - National planning standards

58B: Purposes of national planning standards

You could also call this:

“National planning standards help make rules about how to use land and protect the environment”

National planning standards have specific purposes that you should know about. They are meant to help achieve the goals of the Resource Management Act. These standards set out rules about how regional policy statements and plans should be structured, formatted, and what they should contain.

The Minister can use these standards to make sure certain things are consistent across the country. They can also use them to support the implementation of national environmental standards, policy statements, and regulations. Additionally, these standards can help people follow the procedural principles outlined in section 18A.

It’s important to note that when dealing with matters related to the coastal marine area, any mention of ‘the Minister’ in this section and sections 58C to 58K refers to the Minister of Conservation.
