Resource Management Act 1991

Effect of nitrogenous fertiliser on freshwater quality and freshwater ecosystems

217Q: Regulations relating to sales information on nitrogenous fertiliser

You could also call this:

“Rules about recording and sharing information when farmers buy fertiliser to help protect water”

The Governor-General can make rules about collecting and sharing information when people buy fertilisers that contain nitrogen. These rules are made after the Minister talks to the Minister of Agriculture.

The rules can say that certain people must collect information when someone buys nitrogen fertiliser. This information can include things like when and where it was bought, who sold it, who bought it, what kind of fertiliser it was, how much was bought, and where it will be used.

The rules can also say how this information should be collected. They can say that the people who collect this information must share it with groups like the EPA, regional councils, or other specific people or agencies. The rules will say how and how often this information should be shared.

The rules can only allow collecting personal information about a buyer if they buy more than a certain amount of nitrogen fertiliser.

These rules are called secondary legislation. You can find out more about how they are published in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
