Resource Management Act 1991

Environment Court - Environment Judges and alternate Environment Judges

251A: Appointment of acting Chief Environment Court Judge

You could also call this:

“What happens when the Chief Environment Court Judge can't work and someone else fills in”

If the Chief Environment Court Judge is unable to do their job, you need to know what happens. The Chief Environment Court Judge might be ill, away from New Zealand, or not able to work for another reason. The job might also be empty, with no one currently holding the position.

The Governor-General can choose another Environment Judge to fill in for the Chief Environment Court Judge. This person will do the Chief Environment Court Judge’s job until they can work again or someone new is appointed. You can find more information about the Resource Management Act on the New Zealand legislation website.

When the acting Chief Environment Court Judge is working, they can do all the things the real Chief Environment Court Judge can do. They have the same powers as the Chief Environment Court Judge, so they can make decisions and take actions as needed. This is all part of the Resource Management Act, which you can learn more about by reading the act and its amendments.
