56: Purpose of New Zealand coastal policy statements
or “Explains how special rules help protect New Zealand's coast”

You could also call this:

“Rules for making official plans about how to look after New Zealand's beaches and oceans”

You must always have at least one New Zealand coastal policy statement. The Minister of Conservation prepares, recommends, and issues this statement. They use one of the processes mentioned in section 46A(3). When they do this, they follow the rules in sections 46 to 52, but instead of talking about the Minister and national policy statements, these rules apply to the Minister of Conservation and New Zealand coastal policy statements.

Sections 53, 54, and 55 also apply to New Zealand coastal policy statements. When you read these sections, you should think of New Zealand coastal policy statements instead of national policy statements, and the Minister of Conservation instead of the Minister.

If you want to know about the legal status of a New Zealand coastal policy statement under the Legislation Act 2019, you can look at section 52(4). For changes, amendments, or cancellations of a New Zealand coastal policy statement, you can check section 53(3).
