“This part explains important words and places related to big storms and floods that happened in New Zealand”

In sections 330AAA, 330AA, and 330C, you’ll find some important terms defined. These terms are used when talking about emergency works related to severe weather events.

An “affected area” means a place that has been impacted by one or more severe weather events.

An “area” refers to specific regions or districts in New Zealand. These include the regions of Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay. It also includes the districts of Tararua, Manawatū, Rangitikei, Masterton, Carterton, and South Wairarapa.

A “severe weather event” means one of three specific weather events:

  1. Cyclone Hale, which hit the North Island from 8 January to 12 January 2023.
  2. Heavy rainfall that happened from 26 January to 3 February 2023 in the Northland, Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty regions.
  3. Cyclone Gabrielle, which affected the North Island from 12 February to 16 February 2023.

This part of the law will no longer be in effect after 1 October 2024.
