Resource Management Act 1991

Resource consents

87: Types of resource consents

You could also call this:

“This part explains the different kinds of permissions you need to do certain things with land and water.”

In this law, a resource consent means permission to do something that would usually not be allowed. There are different types of resource consents:

A land use consent lets you do something that would normally go against section 9 or section 13 of the law. This might be about how you use land.

A subdivision consent lets you do something that would normally go against section 11. This might be about dividing land into smaller parts.

A coastal permit lets you do something in a coastal marine area that would normally go against sections 12, 14, 15, 15A, and 15B. This is about activities near the coast.

A water permit lets you do something that would normally go against section 14, but not in a coastal marine area. This might be about using water.

A discharge permit lets you do something that would normally go against section 15, but not in a coastal marine area. This might be about releasing substances into the environment.
