Land Transport Act 1998

Motor vehicle registration and licensing - Change of registered person on sale or other disposition

247: Obligations of sellers and acquirers of motor vehicles

You could also call this:

“Rules for telling the government when you sell or get a car”

When you sell a registered motor vehicle, you and the person buying it have some important things to do. If you’re the seller, you need to tell the Registrar about the sale right away. You’ll need to give them some specific information that the rules say you must provide.

If you’re the person buying the vehicle, you also need to tell the Registrar about it straight away. Just like the seller, you’ll need to give them certain details that the rules require.

Sometimes, you might get a motor vehicle in a way that’s not buying it. If this happens, and it’s one of the ways mentioned in the rules, you still need to tell the Registrar about it right away. You’ll need to give them the information that the rules say you must provide.

When you’re telling the Registrar about selling, buying, or getting a vehicle in another way, you need to do it exactly how the rules say. The rules will explain how you should give this information.
