This law sets targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles. The targets are different for two types of vehicles: Type A and Type B.

For the year 2023, Type A vehicles should not emit more than 145 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre. Type B vehicles should not emit more than 218.3 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

In 2024, the targets become stricter. Type A vehicles should not emit more than 133.9 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre. Type B vehicles should not emit more than 201.9 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

After 2024, the government can set new targets through regulations. These targets will help vehicle importers know how much carbon dioxide their vehicles can emit.

Whenever you see ‘grams’ mentioned in this law, it means grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

175Targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions

  1. The targets for the purposes of calculating the weight-adjusted target applicable to each vehicle importer in accordance with the regulations are,—

  2. for the calendar year beginning on 1 January 2023,—
    1. for Type A vehicles, 145 grams; and
      1. for Type B vehicles, 218.3 grams; and
      2. for the calendar year beginning on 1 January 2024,—
        1. for Type A vehicles, 133.9 grams; and
          1. for Type B vehicles, 201.9 grams; and
                1. for any calendar year after 2024, any target set by regulations made under section 167C(1)(j)(iv).

                  1. Every reference to grams in subsection (1) must be read as a reference to grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.
