Land Transport Act 1998

Motor vehicle registration and licensing - Cancellation of registration

256: Discretion to refund fees

You could also call this:

“The Registrar can choose to give you a refund for unused vehicle registration or trade plates”

If the Registrar cancels the registration of a motor vehicle under section 255, or if you give back a trade plate before it expires, the Registrar might decide to give you some money back. This means that if you’ve paid for a longer time than you ended up using the registration or trade plate, you might get some of that money returned to you. The amount you could get back would be equal to the fee you paid for the time you didn’t use. For a cancelled vehicle registration, you might get back some of the licence fee. For a trade plate you’ve given back early, you might get back some of the trade plate fee. The Registrar can decide to do this without needing any extra permission.
