Land Transport Act 1998

Motor vehicle registration and licensing - Registration plates

263: Transitional provision for existing registration plates

You could also call this:

“You can keep using your old car number plates”

If you have a registration plate that was given to you under the Transport (Vehicle and Driver Registration and Licensing) Act 1986 or any similar act, you can keep using it. The government will treat it as if it was given to you under the current rules. This means you don’t need to get a new registration plate just because the law has changed.
