Land Transport Act 1998

Transport services licensing - Licensing of transport services

30J: Transport service operators must be licensed

You could also call this:

“People who run transport businesses must have special permission”

You need to have a special licence to run certain types of transport services. This rule applies to five different kinds of services:

  1. If you want to move goods for other people, you need a goods service licence.

  2. If you want to carry many passengers at once, you need a large passenger service licence.

  3. If you want to rent out vehicles to others, you need a rental service licence.

  4. If you want to carry a small number of passengers or help arrange such rides, you need a small passenger service licence.

  5. If you want to tow or recover broken-down vehicles, you need a vehicle recovery service licence.

You’re not allowed to run any of these services without the right licence. This rule is part of New Zealand’s land transport laws.
