You can transfer carbon dioxide credits to another importer's account. You must follow the regulations when doing this. If you transfer credits between new and used vehicle accounts, the credits are calculated differently. You get 2 credits in a used vehicle account for each credit from a new vehicle account. You get 1 credit in a new vehicle account for each 2 credits from a used vehicle account. The regulations explain how to do this. You can find more information about the regulations and the Land Transport Act 1998 on the New Zealand legislation website. The Land Transport (Clean Vehicle Standard) Amendment Act 2025 changed some of the rules about transferring credits. You can read about these changes on the legislation website.
